Surrounded by the peaceful landscape near Trebon, the Schwarzenberg Tomb is a remarkable funerary monument associated with the influential Schwarzenberg family. Located in an English-style park on the southeastern side of Pond Svet in the South Bohemian Region, the tomb stands about one kilometer from Trebon Chateau. Its construction began in 1874 at the initiative of Jan Adolf II Schwarzenberg and his wife, Princess Eleonora, after the family’s earlier burial site at the nearby Church of St. Giles could no longer meet their needs. Designed in the Neo-Gothic style, the two-story structure was completed and consecrated in 1877. Its distinctive six-sided plan, monumental double staircase, and chapel give the building a striking appearance within the surrounding parkland. Beneath the chapel lies the family crypt, ingeniously designed with a drainage and ventilation system to protect it from moisture in the sandy ground near the pond. The chapel features an altar made from white sandstone and Istrian marble, while the crypt contains historic marble sarcophagi and the remains of members of the noble family. Today, the Schwarzenberg Tomb offers visitors a glimpse into 19th-century funerary architecture, the history of one of Bohemia’s prominent aristocratic families, and the carefully designed landscape around Trebon.

The tomb was founded by Jan Adolf II Schwarzenberg at the instigation of his wife, Eleanor Schwarzenberg. Construction began in 1874 and was completed only three years later, in 1877. The relatively short construction period reflects the importance that the Schwarzenberg family placed on creating a permanent and dignified resting place for its members.

Designed as a family burial site, the tomb was intended to provide a dedicated place where members of the Schwarzenberg dynasty could be laid to rest. The interior contains 26 coffins, making the building both a memorial to individual family members and a lasting representation of the family’s long presence in the region. Such family tombs were often designed not only for practical purposes but also as monuments expressing continuity, status, and remembrance.

The location of the tomb contributes strongly to its atmosphere. Set within a park near the large pond known as Pond World, the monument is surrounded by greenery and peaceful scenery. The landscape creates a calm setting that contrasts with the solemn purpose of the building. Visitors approaching the tomb through the park can experience the monument as part of a carefully chosen environment rather than as an isolated structure.

Trebon itself is closely associated with historic aristocratic estates, ponds, parks, and architectural monuments, making the Schwarzenberg Tomb a natural part of the area’s cultural heritage. Its location close to the town center also allows visitors to combine a visit to the tomb with an exploration of Trebon’s historic streets and other landmarks.

The monument offers an opportunity to learn more about the Schwarzenberg family and its role in the history of southern Bohemia. Noble families played an important part in shaping the region’s estates, landscapes, architecture, and cultural traditions, and memorial buildings such as the Schwarzenberg Tomb preserve a visible reminder of that influence.

Today, the Schwarzenberg Tomb remains an important historical and architectural landmark near Trebon. Built between 1874 and 1877, the monument continues to serve as the final resting place of members of the Schwarzenberg family. With its peaceful park setting, proximity to Trebon, and carefully preserved funerary character, the tomb provides a memorable destination for visitors interested in Czech aristocratic history, 19th-century architecture, and the cultural heritage of southern Bohemia.
