Discover Czech Regions: Moravian-Silesian Region
This region was formerly known as “Steel Heart of the Country”, for its numerous industrial companies, which has seen a significant slowdown in recent years. Despite the heavy industry, the nature here is well preserved with three large Landscape Protected Areas. The region’s culture is influenced by Czech, Polish and Slovakian communities. The centre of the Moravian-Silesian region is the city of Ostrava, the third biggest city in the Czech Republic.
Czech Cities & Town: Town of Opava
Opava is currently an important business and cultural center of Silesia. It is the location of several economic and cultural institutions serving the entire region, including the Silesian Museum which is the oldest Museum in the Czech Republic. Opava is the birthplace of the father of genetics Johann Gregor Mendel and the famous Czech poet Petr Bezruc.
Czech Destination: Town of Karvina
The town of Karvina lies near to the Beskydy Mountains in the Olše river valley. For decades the town of Karvina and its surroundings was an area with high concentration of coal mining and related industries. More recently, this town has become a commercial and tourist center. The Karvina Darkov Spa has a worldwide reputation for treatment of locomotive organs.
Czech Landmarks: Museum Beskyd in Frydek Mistek
The Museum Beskyd Frydek Mistek is a contribution organization established by the Moravian-Silesian Region. Its headquarters is situated in Frydek Castle, and it is also the administrator of the Castle including the nearby building premises with the Lang Building. The Museum usually organizes a lot of natural historical exhibitions. A studies library also belongs to the Museum.
