Regional Museum of the Town of Zdar nad Sazavou

The Regional Museum of the Town of Zdar nad Sazavou, founded in 1934, is located in the city center under the church of St. Prokop, where two museum buildings stand almost opposite each other. In the first, which is a late medieval city-fortress, short-term exhibitions are held. In the second, called Moucek’s House, there is a permanent exhibition of the city’s history. Both buildings are barrier-free.
Moucek’s House bears the name of its former owners.

The tours last an hour and take place with a guide.

In the first hall, you will get acquainted with the history of the city from its beginnings to the 20th century. The foundation of the Cistercian monastery in 1252, in which a unique chronicle of the monk Jindrich Rezbar was created, is commemorated. The original settlement of Zdar changed its location twice; the second is represented by a ceramic hobby, a children’s toy from the 13th century. In the room, you will see the original mayor’s law (scepter), a guild chest, and a Baroque sculpture of the Virgin Mary from the Panske lazne building. There are also famous Zdar products, such as the zdarka pipe and the mejdlicka (soap) confectionery or mesh bag, the latter of which was the invention of Vavrin Krcil. There is also a blueprint, white burner embroidery, netting of human hair and a silver gilded cutlery set found during the demolition of one house in 2006.

The second room is a First Republic store with a period range, complete with a sample of some crafts. You will see the original coffee roaster, toothpaste, and shoemaker tool. The third room recalls the famous Zdar personalities and has the form of a burgher salon from the beginning of the 20th century. Here you will find paintings by the painter Anton Johann Ferenz, a piano by Frantisek Drdla, a composer popular with President Coolidge’s wife, products by the glassworks of Frantisek Ignac Hafenbrädl, and a portable toilet by the merchant Rudolf Sablik.

In the last room, you can try replicas of medieval armor or period costumes. In the photos, you will see other important Zdaraky, including hockey world champions Koukal, Rolinka and Vampola, and speed skater Martina Sablikova.
The museum organizes various events for the public during the year. The most popular include the Museum Night, guided tours of the tower of the parish church of St. Prokop, and walks through the city center to its history and monuments.
