Located at the confluence of the Tepla and Ohre rivers in the western part of Bohemia, Karlovy Vary is a world-renowned spa city celebrated for its mineral springs, elegant colonnades, and rich cultural history. Situated in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic, approximately 130 kilometers west of Prague, the town has developed over centuries into one of Europe’s most famous and prestigious spa destinations.

The history of Karlovy Vary dates back to the 14th century, around 1370, when King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV officially granted the settlement city rights. Local legend holds that the emperor discovered the therapeutic mineral springs during a hunting expedition in the surrounding forested hills. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the spa town gained international prominence, attracting aristocrats, world leaders, writers, and musicians from across Europe, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Peter the Great.

The city’s most iconic features are its historic colonnades, which shelter the natural thermal springs used for traditional drinking cures. Among the most famous is the Mill Colonnade, an impressive Neo-Renaissance structure housing several distinct mineral sources. Nearby, the Hot Spring Colonnade protects the Vridlo, the city’s largest and hottest spring, which spouts mineral water up to a height of 12 meters at a temperature of approximately 72 degrees Celsius. Other notable structures include the Market Colonnade and the delicate wooden Park Colonnade, each contributing to the distinctive architectural character of the spa zone.

Beyond the mineral springs, the city features a wealth of architectural, cultural, and industrial heritage. Granhotel Pupp, a luxurious hotel complex with origins in the early 18th century, stands as a prime example of grand European hotel architecture. The city is also famous for its traditional glassmaking and liqueur production; it is the birthplace of Moser crystal, known worldwide for handcrafted luxury glassware, and Becherovka, a historic herbal liqueur produced in the town since 1807. Additionally, the city hosts the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival every summer, one of the oldest film festivals in the world.

The surrounding landscape of the Karlovy Vary Region plays an important role in the city’s appealing atmosphere. Wooded hills crisscrossed with kilometers of maintained walking trails surround the valley, offering scenic viewpoints such as the Diana Observation Tower. With its combination of therapeutic mineral waters, elegant architecture, famous cultural events, and beautiful natural setting, Karlovy Vary offers a unique and memorable experience for travelers exploring the Czech Republic.
