Ladislav Sutnar, one of the most important figures of Czech inter-war Modernism and a leading figure of American and international art and design, has a pre-eminent status among famous people born in Pilsen. During his life he received numerous awards and commendations. Just as an example we can mention his successes from the inter-war period – such as his silver medal for toy design at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925, his gold medals for exhibition design at the International Exposition in Barcelona in 1929 and at the Milan Triennale in 1936. He also received posthumous awards – in October 1979 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the New York Art Directors Club. In 2001 he was awarded a State Order of Merit for Culture in memoriam by President Václav Havel.
The Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art (former Faculty of Art and Design) of the University of West Bohemia honors the life and work of this genius artist with the annual Ladislav Sutnar Prize. The Ladislav Sutnar Prize is awarded to living Czech and international artists for outstanding performance in the field of fine arts, especially applied arts and design, possibly also in connection with pedagogical work of the nominees. It can be also awarded to institutions that support modern art and design through their program and activities.
