The Kuks Hospital, which originally served its purpose as a resting place for retired soldiers, is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Hradec Kralove Region. Everyone associates this “pearl of the Czech Baroque” with statues of allegories of Virtues and Vices or with one of the oldest pharmacies, U Pomegranate. But the area and its surroundings offer much more!
Just a few steps from the cascade staircase you will find the official tourist information centre on the banks of the Elbe. Housed in the listed Art Nouveau Jeschke Villa, it is open daily from April to October. In addition to traditional tourist souvenirs, you can also buy truly original pieces, such as baroque perfume or herbal liqueur made using the original recipe from the hospital. Helpful staff will provide you with a complete information service, for those interested they also organize sightseeing tours of Braun’s Bethlehem. The author of this unique sculptural-landscape realization was, at the request of Count Frantisek Antonin Spork, the important Baroque sculptor Matyas Bernard Braun. The nativity scene has been protected as a national cultural monument since 2002.
But Kuks’ offer doesn’t end there! You can see, for example, the Rentz Museum of Baroque Printing, the Family Museum of Veterans, the Jiri Nachlinger Puppet Gallery or the Czech Pharmaceutical Museum. During the summer, Kuks also hosts open-air thematic fairs, which are full of tastes, aromas, crafts and playfulness. You can visit a festive, gourmet or traditional fair for free. The busy cultural program is complemented by musical events such as the popular musicals Dracula, Children of Paradise, The Man with the Iron Mask or Night at Karlstejn. These are held in the open air in any weather. The Church of the Holy Trinity hosts the international classical music festival Kuks Music Summer and the THEATRUM KUKS multi-genre festival of Baroque and Baroque-inspired art in other places.
If you love the atmosphere of Kuks, stay here overnight and wake up with a view from the window directly at the hospital. You can stay in one of the four apartments with a Baroque touch. And treat yourself to a romantic dinner in the adjacent restaurant with the characteristic name Baroque.
